food for thought

Normally, I like to end with a Scripture, but today I’d like to begin with one.  It comes from the sixth chapter of John, verses 26 and 27.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.  But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food.  Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.  For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.

Jesus had just disappeared after feeding the 5,000.  It wasn’t long before the crowd came looking for him.  After all, they were hungry and he fed them.  Jesus of course calls them out on it.

Don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food.

Of course, while these people were concerned about the lack thereof, I am concerned about the abundance.  However, I think the idea still applies.

I spend so much time thinking about what I am going to eat.  At the beginning of the week, I plan out all my meals.  As soon as I wake up in the morning, I am thinking about how I am going to ration my calories.  If I know I am going somewhere, the first thing I consider is how I am going to keep up my diet.

Is this too obsessive? Am I too concerned about something perishable?

Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.

These people were so concerned with their physical needs that they were completely ignoring their spiritual needs.  Jesus was telling them, “Hey, there is much more at stake here than an empty belly.”

And, as someone too concerned with her physical appearance, I think that He has something to say to me here, too.

“Hey there’s much more at stake here than a skinny belly.”

When I am prioritizing my time to accommodate my meal plans over time with my Lord and Savior, then I have a problem.  When I neglect my spiritual needs to attend to my physical wants, then something’s not right.

What are you most concerned about today?
