swimmin with the piggies

I decided it was time to tackle #7 on my summer to-do list:  Buy a tankini.  Man, was I in for a treat.  Who knew buying a simple bathing suit would be so much trouble?

For starters, who said modest had to mean boring?

I work in a department store, right in the middle of the swimwear to be exact.  Every day I get to gather, sort and hang piles and piles of bathing suits from the dressing room.  And through all this gathering, sorting and hanging, I’ve noticed a trend.

All the one-pieces and tankinis are either solid colors or boring flowers.

And, it’s not just in the store I work at.  While I was shopping for a bathing suit online, it was only the bikinis that had the interesting patterns and cute details.  The others just left a lot to be desired.

But I eventually found one online.  {Just in time, too.  My vacation is less than three weeks away!}

All this to say that modesty is worth the effort.  In fact, it is more than worth the effort.

This past year, I interviewed dozens of {Christian} guys for an article I wrote on body image for my magazine writing class.  Several emphasized how important modesty was.

“Don’t wear things that can cause guys to stumble,” one said. “Sure you will probably get attention and maybe feel better about yourself from it, but its safe to say guys are more tempted than many girls think.”

I don’t want to cause anyone to stumble, and I certainly don’t want that kind of attention.  I want to be considered beautiful for the right reasons.

A beautiful woman who lacks discretion is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.

~Proverbs 11:22
