pretty is as pretty does {#3}

Without a doubt, the very best part about my internship at the Arkansas Baptist News Magazine {which I will refer to as ABNM from this moment on} is all the amazing people I get to meet.  In less than two months there, I have already met enough pretty-doers to supply me with a year’s worth of posts.

But since I have to start somewhere, I’ll start with the subject of one of my most recent stories:  Miss Alex Edmonds.

I actually met Alex in January of this year at a Disciple Now at First Baptist Church, Crossett.  We both had the opportunity to lead different age groups of girls in Bible study throughout the weekend.

Because we were in different places the majority of the time, we didn’t get to talk much.  The most I was able to pick up was that she was an emerging Christian music artist.

Fast forward seven months, and I am sitting in a story assignment meeting at ABNM and Alex’s name is brought up.  *Lightbulb!* “Hey, I know her! I think we might be Facebook friends,” I say.  And the story was mine.

I honestly don’t know what I was expecting Alex to be like, but she blew me away in our interview.  Even Christian artists have an image to protect, especially ones as promising as Alex, but she poured her heart out to me with relative ease.

A couple of things stood out about Alex that mark her as a genuine pretty-doer:

#1 Her compassion for others.  I first saw it in her work with the younger girls at Crossett—they absolutely adored her—but I got the chance to hear about it in detail during our interview.  She said above all, she wants her music to minister to others.  Over and over again she reiterated that her favorite part is getting to meet people and share stories with them.  It was clear that her heart is just as a big as her voice.
#2 Her honesty.   Alex didn’t have to open up to me like she did, but getting to hear about her struggles and how God helped her overcome was such a blessing to me and will be to everyone who reads the article.  It is easy to want to hide our faults and failures, but the most beautiful women are the ones that are real and genuine.

#3 Her talent.  Oh, I forgot to mention, the girl can sing!  But talent alone doesn’t make one a pretty-doer.  It’s the fact that Alex is using her talents to serve the Lord in every way she can.  But don’t just take my word for it—check out her website yourself {} and hear her newest single, “When I Look at You.”

I’ll even make it easy:

If you want to know more about Alex’s story {and trust me, you do}, check out my article in the ABNM on July 28.  You can subscribe to the online edition here:

Until then, I’ll leave you with a verse Alex gave me that has been on my heart ever since:

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

~Matthew 6:33
