t3 - three things in three months

Sunday marked Daniel’s and my third month anniversary {woo to the hoo!}. Don’t worry, I don’t plan on updating you each month, I just thought it was appropriate to highlight three things I’ve learned about marriage after three months for the “Thursday Three.” That’s a lot of threes…

So I’ll start by admitting that I still have so much to learn. It’s only been ¼ of a year! But counseling and advice from other couples and some rough patches of our own have taught me a lot. So I’ll humbly share what I have learned…
1. Pray together every day. If I had to give only one piece of advice, this would be it. We are our strongest, more loving, more forgiving, more Christ-like, when we spend time talking to God together. I have learned so much more about my husband from our nightly prayer times.

2. Laugh together every day. I’m pretty sure it's Daniel’s mission in life to make me laugh on an hourly basis. Which is great, because I think it is imperative to preserve the ability to play together. Marriage should be fun, though I totally understand how easy it is to get in a funk – especially with dental school.  I suggest a weekly date night to mix things up, and I have plenty of ideas here.

3. Grow together every day. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far? It’s not about me. And it is about me. Everyday I need to look for more ways to serve him and love him better - to put him first. And when problems arise, I need to look at myself and see what selfishness, what little-g gods, what pride I have that’s the source - to examine my heart first. It seems like a contradiction, but it’s the reality when two sinful people enter into a covenant relationship. There is always room to grow.

I’m still a novice at this marriage thing. So I’d love to hear advice from people who have survived and thrived together much longer than we have. What’s your number one advice?

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
~Genesis 2:24
