a hair affair

If you know anything about me, you know that I love my hair. Unfortunately, with the move to the big city, I still haven’t been able to find a local hairdresser. That means it had been four months since I had a cut or color.

My hair was literally been begging for some loving.

Good thing Claire – the talented hair stylist who did the cut, color and do for my wedding (check out the video here) – had time to see me the weekend I was home. I had been thinking a lot about what my next look would be. Here are some of my Pinterest inspirations: 1, 2, 3.

I think it is incredibly important to know exactly what you want when you go into a hair appointment. So many people bring in pictures and tell the stylist they want “something like this” and then the stylist gives them something like that, but it wasn’t the exact “something like this” they wanted.

You get what you ask for, and a haircut is no different. I love this advice from Maskara, my favorite beauty blogger, who has great tips for going into a hair appointment. Basically, tell the stylist exactly what you want and then ask if that is even possible with your hair type and their skill set.

Here was my wish list…

-I want to keep as much length as possible, but get rid of all the dead ends.
-I want lots of layers to improve the body and decrease drying time.
-BUT, I don’t want it to look choppy when I decide to straighten my hair.
-I want to keep my bangs long.

-I want my base color to be as close to my natural color as possible.
-I want it to be brown, but I don’t want it to be almost black like before.
-I want it to be warm, but not red.
-I want a few caramel highlights, but not so much that I would be mistaken for a blonde.

What can I say? I know what I want.

Here is the before and after:

The lighting in the salon wasn’t that great, and the first couple of days my hair was a lot darker than I wanted. So here is a picture of my hair a week later. With both the natural lighting and the natural lightening, you can see that my hair is the exact color I wanted. You can also see the highlights much better. Plus, I just like my hair so much better with some curl in it.

I think this was my perfect transition into Fall, and the perfect compliment to my Fall wardrobe – it’s crazy how different clothes look with my new hair color.

Are you thinking about switching it up? What 'do are you currently rocking?
