the glory thief

For the past month I have been blessed to be a part of the Downtown parish at Christ City Church. Together, we have been reading through The Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler. Last week, I met with the other women in the group to discuss his second chapter on “Man.”

Thus, sparked an incredible conversation on the kindness and the severity of God. {I encourage you to pick up the book and read about it.} One of the ladies shared the prayer above, and it has stuck with me ever since.

How many times a day do I disregard the glory of God? I was created to worship Him, to praise Him, to bring glory to His name, yet most days this worship is misplaced – and too often it becomes a worship of self. I am a glory thief, yet I always come away empty-handed.

“Lord, convict me of the ways I disregard Your Glory.”

As my prayer this week, I am sharing several verses that remind me of the splendor of His glory:

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
~Psalm 29:2

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
~Psalm 79:18-19

I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.
~Isaiah 42:8

It was so hard to pick only three. There is evidence upon evidence that we were made for His glory (Genesis 1:27). That we fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23). And that everything we do should be for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

“Lord, convict me of ways I disregard your glory, today.”

  1. Spot on, thank you for sharing!! I've been thinking about this a lot recently too. It's so convicting!!!

  2. Isaiah 26:8 is a statement verse, but it is also a pretty powerful verse to pray. Also, Revelation 4:11 is a strong "Its about Him, not about me" verse.

  3. Those are both really good ones. I was looking at Revelation 4:11 when I was trying to decide on my three. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Glad to help. Praying for you, girl!
