runners tell all: my favorite running gear

When I saw the prompt for this month’s Runners Tell All with Amanda and Beka I knew writing this post would be a struggle. You see… I’m a pretty low maintenance runner.

I’m not dedicated to a certain brand of running shoe. I don’t invest in fancy headphones because I don’t listen to music. I even wear Walmart-brand sports bras sometimes.

The best thing about running is that anyone can do it and it doesn’t have to be a huge investment. That being said, here’s what I grab when it’s time to run:

Also something you should know... I never, ever, ever match. I'm always a hodge podge of colors,
and I'm okay with that because I'm not concerned with looking cute when I run.
That being said, I don't own the outfit above. Just the shoes.

1. Asics GT-2000 2 in Electric Melon – Shoes are the only piece of running gear that I highly recommend investing in. I wrote a whole post about how critical it is to find the right running shoe here. When I went to get fitted at Fleet Feet, these just so happened to be the best shoes for me.

2. Sports Bra - Any one will do – just make sure it has enough support for you. I’m on the smaller side, so I don’t have to be that picky. A majority of my sports bras have been Christmas or birthday presents because every one knows I will use them.

3. Running Shorts – All my Nike running shorts were gifts or were purchased with birthday money. The rest of my shorts came from Target or TJMaxx. I prefer the kind with built-in underwear because it reduces my chances of getting chafe. And, they absolutely must not be made of cotton.

4. iPhone Armband – The picture shows a fancy one that would be nice to have so I could store my debit card or cash for emergencies. In reality, mine came from Walmart. Like I said before, I don’t listen to music, but I like to have my iPhone with me to keep up with my time, distance and pace.

5. Nike+ Running App – And, I keep up with my time, distance and pace with the Nike+ Running App. It’s the only app I have ever spent money on, and the $2 was definitely worth it. I also wrote a post on other (free) apps I use when I run, too.

And… that about does it. I do wear a shirt, but it’s an old t-shirt that I cut the sleeves off of, so I didn’t really want to show you a picture of that. My socks also came from Walmart, so that’s not very exciting either. I told you – it’s the only area of my life that I’m low maintenance. I just can’t justify spending a lot of money on something I’m going to sweat all over and have to replace in less than a year.

What about you? Do you have any special running gear that you can convince me is worth it?

  1. I've recenlty found one of the best sports bra's I have ever worn! I picked it up from TJ Maxx. I really need a new armband. We had one that I tossed because it was crazy old and have never replaced it. I'm going to have to check out the Nike app!

  2. I love the Nike+ Running App. I just invested in a very basic watch to see how I like it, but so far the Nike+ app on my phone is more comfortable for me. Maybe I'll get used to the watch soon though :) Thanks for linking up!

  3. The arm band is a must! I don't run a lot, but if I do, I have to have music!

  4. When I'm not running with the stroller, the arm band is my best friend!!
I've been debating whether I should get the Nike app! You've convinced me that I should :)
And I only buy my nike shorts at TJ Maxx. Love that place! Or the Nike outlet when they are on clearance, ha ha!

  5. The Nike+ app is a must have for me too, it's just so useful isn't it? I can't believe you run without music, how do you do that? I think I need the distraction to much to even try without music!

  6. I need to have music when I run... But I love that you use an old t-shirt! Sometimes we all get too caught up in the high tech gear when all it really takes is a good pair of shoes... and some clothes - don't want to run naked! :)

  7. You're so funny! I rarely match in my running clothes. And even if my clothes match, there's a good chance my bright colored shoes clash with my outfit. I try to look cute, it just doesn't usually work out!

  8. i'm really not a runner, but for exercise i do wear my nike shorts and an old baggy tshirt. i honestly prefer the old baggy tshirt to expensive running tanks. like you said, it's just going to get dirty and sweaty! also, i DO NOT look cute when i exercise. baha.
i just bought a fitbit flex a couple of weeks ago and have loved that it tracks my active minutes, my distance, and my calories!

  9. TJ Maxx has the best workout clothing! I never pay full price for Nike/Under Armour brand clothes. And, the Nike app is the next best thing to a fancy watch!

  10. What kind of watch did you get?

  11. I used to listen to music all the time, but then I learned it's highly discouraged during races. So, I weened myself off. Now i just use the armband to carry my phone so I can see my mileage/time on the Nike App.

  12. Haha that's the only two places I've purchased Nike Shorts - why pay full price for those? And, the Nike app is a must - it's the best substitution for a watch.

  13. I used to run with music all the time. And, if I'm running inside on the elliptical or treadmill, I still do sometimes. But where I went to college started having all these reports of women getting attacked on running trails. I decided that safety was most important and stopped listening to music and started finding running buddies. It was tough but I weened myself off!

  14. I used to need music, too, but like I said below I weened myself off for safety reasons. And who says you need clothes? There's quite a few 5k's out there that say differently (of which I've never participated and never plan to).

  15. Any efforts to look cute while running are immediately dashed the moment I start sweating. I usually end every run drenched from head to toe - so there's really no point in fancy running clothes!

  16. I love my Asics - that's for sure! The right shoe is everything - and I've had a horrible case of shin splints and plantar fasciitis to prove it...

  17. Old t-shirts are the way to go! That way I'm not bothered when they get pit stains.... Besides, if you look cute while your exercising, you're not working hard enough!

I've never heard of fitbit flex, is it one of those bracelets you wear? My mom-in-love just bought some bracelet that tracks her steps, active minutes and even sleeping habits. It's crazy what technology can do!

  18. yeah it's a wristband! it also tracks your sleeping habits...like how many times you wake up or are restless during the night.

  19. I got a Timex Ironman watch. It is taking some getting used to, but hopefully I warm up to it soon!

  20. I'm super low maintenance too! And I don't match either. Nothing wrong with that :)

  21. ah, best running garb ever- love how honest you are about just showing up and getting it done and not worrying too much about what you're wearing. can we be running buddies??

  22. All my sports bras have been from Walmart, Target and Old Navy! Nobody ever sees it and all the namebrand-y stuff seem like they're designed to be seen and that's not what I'm after! I need a little bit more help in that area and the ones that I get do the trick without costing a pretty penny!

That said, unfortunately, I'm a "get ALL the stuff!" kind of girl! LOL I hated (HAAAATED) running (but for some reason still insisted that I wanted to be a runner) and picking up gear was a big motivator for me. Telling myself that I could get "insert gear/gadget here" once I reached a certain running goal helped push me to keep going and then once I reached that goal, helped me set another goal! I've got pretty much all the gear I can think of and it's been four years and I'm still running and looking to improve! Also, I'm a matchy-match kind of girl too. My outfit has to match my shoes. Because I'm crazy LOL

  23. What's the point of looking cute when you're just going to sweat? And, my pleasure! Love this linkup!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you! And of course we can! I need to get back into a routine for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey! Whatever motivates you to run, I say go for it! And I'm all for a cute matching outfit - I just don't have the patience (or the right shoes) for it, haha.

  26. I love that you are a low-maintenance runner! I agree that shoes are definitely the one area to splurge in. Actually, I don't consider it a splurge, it's more a necessity for injury prevention!

I had to laugh at your 'catch all running clothes' because I just saw your cute outfit post on instagram and you're STYLING! Then when it comes to running you are perfectly fine with anything. I like that you have a fun variety and don't have to be 'in style' all the time!

Thanks for sharing your gear with us.
