my first marathon

If you were around at the beginning of the year, then you know my fitness resolution for 2014 is to run a marathon. I reached my highest consecutive number of miles last April when I completed 13.1 at the Bentonville Half Marathon. In case you’re like me and math’s not your forte - that’s 13.1 miles less than a marathon.

Not going to lie, I’ve been putting off this goal. Even for an avid runner like me, the thought of running for four hours straight kind of makes my stomach queasy. I have a confession to make - I went to fill out the online application on three separate occasions before I finally hit “submit.”

But now it’s official: I’m running my first marathon.

I signed up for the St. Jude Marathon on December 6. I knew when I made this resolution that I wanted to run this particular race. Obviously, it’s for an amazing cause. It’s impossible to do my job without noticing the huge impact St. Jude has on Memphis and the tremendous gains they are making to find a cure for childhood cancer.

Did you know?
  • Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.
  • Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since 1962.
  • And they are currently working so that number is over 90% by the end of the decade.

Now, that’s a cause worth running for.

As part of my participation in the race, I’m trying to raise $500 for St. Jude. If you’d like to make a donation toward that amount, you can do that here.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Have you ever run for a cause? What was it?
