to live is Christ - to die is gain

To live is ______________, to die is gain.

My Evangelical Theology professor loved to point out the brilliance of this statement in Philippians 1:21. She said there’s absolutely nothing you can put in the blank to make that statement true. Except one.

You can’t live for money, clothes, a house, a car, a marriage, a good job, the perfect body, a church, a blog, a friend, a child, good morals or a large scoop of Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked ice cream. Absolutely none of those things are worth anything to you on the other side.

Yet, so often I find myself living to gain the “good life” - the perfect job in the perfect city with the perfect husband in the perfect house with the perfect body with the perfect clothes and the perfect children. Pursuits that leave me tired and frustrated at best.

When the truth is, the “good life” can only be found in Jesus. Jesus - our Savior, our Redeemer, our Friend - He puts the meaning in both life and death. And only He can fill the blanks in your life.

Only when we’re living in Christ do we gain anything in death - eternity with Jesus in His Kingdom, which knows no sin, suffering or pain. Eternal life with the One who created you, knows you intimately and loves you with a love that is too great to understand fully.

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
